Eshet Eilon built a new sorting line for sabres fruits

Eshet Eilon built a new sorting line for sabres fruits, for a customer in Moshav Yevul in southern Israel.
The line includes a conveyor for fruit packages that will be integrated in a robotic packaging system, alongside an advanced optic sorting system.
The sabres fruit, also known as prickly pear cactus fruit, has had a long history in Israel and has become an important symbol of the Israeli culture. Imported to this area around the 18th century, the Sabres was initially used as a natural fence (1).
Based on data published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), nowadays the Sabres plant blooms twice a year in Israel, and is grown more and more in a systematic way, with specific drip irrigation systems (2).
According to local farmers, about 2,000 tons are commercially sold during the summer in Israel, while large amounts are still sold by the side of the roads in a more informal way (3) .
